Hydrogen boosts diesel economy 18/06/2008
 
Adding a small amount of hydrogen to the combustion process brings about a marked improvement in the fuel economy of diesel engines and a dramatic reduction in tail pipe emissions.
Darryl Watts of Oil Drum, which recently collected £20,000 as the winner of the Kent Innovation Challenge 2008, told us at the Kent 2020 conference and exhibition that the system produces a minimum 10% improvement in fuel economy and makes “particulate matter in the exhaust virtually non-existent”.
The technology has been developed in conjunction with nearby University of Kent at Canterbury. The benefits of adding small amounts of hydrogen to enhance combustion have been known for some time, but the breakthrough in this development is its ability to deliver hydrogen on demand by electrolysing distilled water. A maximum of 2 litres of gas is stored by the unit, which is not pressurised.
If leased, a typical repayment for a hydrogen generator over 24 months can be as low as £170 plus VAT per month.
